A ferry services linking Majuli, the world’s largest river island, to Jorhat have been suspended since Sunday due to the rapidly decreasing water level of the Brahmaputra river.

The service suspension has been causing significant inconvenience to the inhabitants of the island.

According to executive engineer of inland water transport’s (IWT) Jorhat division Dwijen Sarma, “Due to rapid decrease in the water level of the river Brahmaputra on the Neemati-Kamalabari ferry route, services on the route has been suspended from Oct 20.

The exact reason of the decreasing water level is yet to be ascertained. However, ferries on the route connecting Afalamukh and Neemati are still operational and passengers have been requested navigate the Neemati-Majuli route through the Afalamukh -Neemati ferry services.”

He added that as the Neemati-Kamalabari route has been suspended, passenger load has increased manifold at the Afalamukh ghat, creating a chaotic situation on Sunday. “IWT has made arrangements of Ro-Pax vessels to cater to the needs of the inhabitants of the island. Also, changes have been made in ferries’ schedule to control the increased footfall until the other route is opened,” Sarma said.
