X-Press Feeders has chosen the Port of Klaipėda as part of a new shipping route served by container vessels powered by green methanol.

On 16 September, a significant milestone in sustainable shipping was marked as the green methanol-powered ship Eco Umande made its inaugural entry into the Lithuanian port, beginning a new era of eco-friendly operations. This vessel will now visit the port every two weeks.

Eco Umande, which will transport containers to and from the Klaipėda Container Terminal, is 148 meters long and has a nominal capacity of 1,260 TEUs. It will operate along the route: Rotterdam (Netherlands) – Antwerp (Belgium) – Klaipėda (Lithuania) – Riga (Latvia) – Rotterdam

“We are pleased that this year, large cargo ships powered by LNG are increasingly arriving at our terminal, LNG bunkering operations have already been carried out, and today we are welcoming the green methanol-powered vessel Eco Umande. All of this proves that as a cargo terminal, we are responsibly prepared to serve not only regular vessels but also environmentally friendly vessels that actively contribute to environmental preservation,” commented Vaidotas Šileika, CEO of Klaipėda Container Terminal.

Earlier this year, in April, X-Press Feeders and six European ports, including Klaipėda, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to accelerate the creation of green shipping corridors and the broader decarbonization of the marine sector in Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea.
